Shea's mom and hubby came to down for the weekend and we headed down to Key West. But first, we all went for a walk through the park.

James zooms in on the owls, an ever popular feature of the park.I got my owl picture as well.We went down to Key West with a couple of goals in mind: go snorkling and ride around on some scooters. Here's Liz, Shea, and James as we prepared to track down a snorkling place.Within the hour, we were loaded up on a catamaran and headed out 7 miles west of Key West to jump in the water with the fishes. It took a few tries, but I finally managed to capture one of the dolphins that were playing in the wake of our boat.I was rockin' the shades fo shizzle. We finally made it out to the reef. The snorkle gear was pretty aweful but we all jumped in and made the best of it.
We saw an awesome school of bright blue fish (the colors didn't show up so well on our disposable camera). Here's another blue fish swimming along the reef.We finished up the underwater sightseeing and returned to the catamaran to get dry.Travelling 7 miles across the water takes a while, so we had time to explore the boat and watch an amazing sunset. The upper level of the catamaran provided a spectacular view in all directions. The clouds provided a softer sunset that was great for pictures like this. Here's a catamaran identical to the one we were on except that we only had about 20 people on ours. I think they must have been out specifically for the sunset and it was a packed ship.Later that night we headed out for some food. Sloppy Joe's was packed beyond belief so we went over to Guy Harvey's where Shea fell in love with this giant fuzzy shark dude.
The next day, it was scooter time.We picked up a couple scooters in the hotel parking lot and bargained with the scooter guy for a better deal.Liz was particularly interested in the Hemingway house so we stopped by for a quick visit. The main attraction - decendents of Hemingway's six-toed cats (keeping the six-toed tradition alive).Nearby was the Key West lighthouse. We stopped just long enough to take a picture or two. Then it was back on the scooters and across the island.Contrary to contemporary logic, the beaches in Key West are not very popular. In fact, the beach is one of the few places on the island with free parking.A handful of beach bums with their wide-handled beach bikes can be found out on the sand.Somewhere along the way, we passed this red brick building that was a definite attention getter.
We went into a few local shops and eyed the knicknacks that were for sale. This piece of art sat outside one such shop. The traffic light turns green and Liz gets ready to boogie! We easily blew past this cycler guy and his portable palm-frond-hat-making station. Here's the dock near an icecream shop where we stopped for a treat. There's plenty of tastey treats to choose from.We decided to stop at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville for some appetizers. The conch fritters were great!Back outside the hotel, the hibiscus were in full bloom.
