Steve came to town for Shea's week-long summer break. We decided to charter a sailboat and hit the seas for a couple of days.

I took a turn at the wheel during our initial departure.Leaving Miami Beach behind.Steve had to take a phone call or two.But he quickly returned to the captain's position.Shea and I were both excited since this was our first sailing experience. It wasn't long before the dramamine kicked in.We headed east out of Miami and then turned south. Our goal was to sail down to the Key Largo area and spend the night there.
Before we left, I wrote down the coordinates of some interesting spots to do some snorkling. One we got there, I wasn't about to find any of the patch reefs or sunken ships I was looking for.The sun was bright and the water was crystal blue. With the sails up and the wind blowing, we were making good time.Steve explained how the boat is supposed to be leaning when you're sailing. The tilt gave him the perfect footing to do his "Captain Morgan".Steve worked the wenches to keep things in order.Below deck, the boat was pretty nice. It had cabins at each end and a convertable table that added additional sleeping area.Shea took a turn at steering for a while.I helped out when the wheel became hard to turn.
After along day of sailing south, we stopped for the night. For lunch the next day, we hopped in the dingy and decided to cruise over to Adam's Key for a picnic. Here's Shea feeding a school of yellow and black fish that were hanging out under the dock at Adam's Key.The key is part of Biscayne National Park and is equipped with a Ranger house and picnic tables.Steve is a master dingy pilot.Back to the boat, we had problems with the generator and with a sour weather forecast, we decided to head back north.Only 25 miles to go!We were all happy despite the complications.
Shea spent most of the trip out cold. The sky was pretty gray by the time we could see the Miami skyline. Here's a view of the Fisher Island condos.South Beach on the right. It looked quite different from this bright picture I took the day before.Miami was straight ahead as we made our way to Miami Beach Marina. Here's another boat that was right behind us.Back on dry land, Steve and I docked the boat to conclude my first sailing trip.
